Day 1 of International Zine Month is: Make a 1 page zine! Don't know what to write about? Make it a zine about why you like zines!
I didn't have the bandwidth to come up with the best topic ever so I made mine about 7 reasons I love zines. Here are photos of the inside pages in different views (excuse the bad lighting).
Here's what it looks like folded out. Mini zines can be weird when you first make them because of how the pages are ordered but once you have it folded like a little booklet it's remarkable the way it's made from just one sheet of paper!
If you'd like a text based version, here is the list of reasons I love zines:
- You can make a zine about whatever you want! DIY (do it yourself) publishing
- It feels empowering to publish in a format that is flexible and forgiving. If you “mess up” you can glue over it!
- There are so many zine communities! Zine fests, collections and libraries, zinesters who swap zines, and zine clubs!
- There are tons of techniques to try! I used a rounded corner paper punch for the first time here!
- Zines provide platform power to marginalized people who are silenced or left out of mainstream media (our words)
- They can be made to teach, inspire, organize, build community, bring awareness, make change
- There are different ways to be involved with zines. Makes zines, read zines, buy zines, swap zines, collect zines, support zines
See you for the next prompt!
