Mentors and Resiliency: A Reflective Interview (100 points, 1 total): An exercise in community, belonging, and agency (class and Profe graded due Weeks 10-14)
Week 4: Think of and select a person in your scholarly community to interview, like a professor, a community leader or activist, or a professional in your field of study or work.
Week 5: Reach out to your potential interviewee via email, online, in person, or over the phone to request to schedule a 5-10 minute interview to talk about their experiences in pursuing their area of work. Communicate with Profe in class or via Canvas messages if you are unable to schedule an interview with the mentor of your choice. We will explore alternative participants together.
By Week 7, meet and record a 5-10 minute audio interview with your mentor in a public place. If your mentor requests not to be audio recorded, take notes by hand and record in writing (by hand or typed out) 4-5 quotes that you can examine later in your writing reflection. To keep your mentor’s identity confidential, ask them to provide you with a pseudonym you may use to refer to them in your paper. Consider and take note of how race, gender, and/or citizenship status may relate to their experiences to examine later in your written analysis.
Week 8: Browse the readings from the Units 1-5 and select an article that relates to a perspective that connects to your mentor’s experiences. Optional: Provide a scholarly article written in the last 5 years that is more relevant to your mentor’s experiences.
Weeks 12-14: Collaborate with other scholars in class who have similar or different findings. Finalize and submit your typed and written analysis in class including 4-5 quotes and a reflection about any insight obtained during the interview process and how it relates to your own scholarly, professional, community, or academic goals (500-750 words).
