Maintaining Academic Integrity

Directly quoted from the CSUSM University Catalog:

Academic Integrity

Each student shall maintain academic integrity in the conduct of their studies and other learning activities at CSUSM. The integrity of this academic institution, and the quality of the education provided in its degree programs, are based on the principle of academic integrity.

The maintenance of academic integrity and quality education is the responsibility of each student within CSUSM and the California State University system. Academic misconduct in connection with an academic program at a campus is listed in Section 41301B, Title 5, California Code of Regulations, as an offense for which a student may be placed on probation, suspended, or expelled. Students should consult their instructors for policy clarification if in doubt. In addition to advice from instructors, the University has multiple resources available including those from the Writing Center and University Library.

Student Responsibilities

  1. Students are responsible for the integrity of their actions, for maintaining the academic standards of the University, for promoting integrity, and for upholding the Academic Integrity Policy.
  2. Students are responsible for knowing and understanding the rules of Academic Integrity as outlined in the university catalog, to include all types of academic misconduct as outlined in this policy.
  3. Students are responsible for communicating with the professor if they do not understand how the policy applies to a particular class or assignment, prior to submitting the assignment or examination. Students are responsible for utilizing the University Library and Writing Center resources on academic integrity to fully understand the differences between a citation, giving credit, paraphrasing, and original writing.
  4. Students are responsible for ensuring all submissions of coursework are the correct file they intend to submit for course credit.

  5. If a student is registered with Disability Support Services (DSS) for approved accommodation, the definitions of academic misconduct described in this policy are not approved accommodations. If a student is not registered  and needs approved accommodations, the student is to contact DSS.

  6. Students engaging in academic misconduct diminish their education and discredit the academic community. Students should not tolerate any action on the part of another student that diminishes their own integrity or that of the University and shall avoid situations likely to compromise academic integrity.

  7. Students witnessing academic misconduct are responsible for reporting incidents to the Dean of Students Office or the course instructor.
