The Cougars Affordable Learning Materials Program (CALM) is part of the CSU Affordable Learning Solutions initiative started in 2010. CALM aims to aid faculty in replacing costly textbooks with lower cost alternatives by using high-quality, open education

2023 - 2024 CALM Faculty Awardees

During the 23/24 academic year, the Cougars Affordable Learning Materials (CALM) program saved students over $3.8 million! The CALM Team would like to thank the below faculty members who took great measures to reduce or eliminate the cost of their course materials during the 23/24 academic year. The CALM Faculty Awardees have either reduced course materials costs or converted to ZCCM courses during this academic year, saving students over $167,000. 

Armaghan Ziaee 

  • WGSS 300-2 - Women of Color Feminisms was converted to a ZCCM course, saving students $1,260 during the 23/24 academic year. 
  • WGSS 490 - Senior Seminar in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies was converted WGSS 490 to a ZCCM course, savings students $1,725 during the 23/24 academic year. 

Flor Saldana 

  • SOC 406 - Women and Crime was converted to a ZCCM course, saving students $4,715 during the 23/24 academic year. 

Justin Morris

  • CS 331 - Computer Architecture was converted to a ZCCM course, savings students $6,851.25 during the 23/24 academic year.

  • EE 301 - Digital Systems Design with HDL was converted to a ZCCM course, saving students $8,225 during the 23/24 academic year. 


Lauren Schwartz

  • ANTH 240 - Introduction to Biological Anthropology was converted to a ZCCM course, saving students $7,892 during the 23/24 academic year. 

Marina Katague 

  • KINE 404 - Introduction to Epidemiology was reduced by $62, saving students $2,480 during the 23/24 academic year. 

Martha Stoddard Holmes

  • LTWR 203 - Literature and Health was converted to a ZCCM course, saving students $3,570 during the 23/24 academic year. 

Meegan Feori-Payne

  • MKTG 454 - Using Social Media for Marketing was reduced by $81, saving students $9,072 during the 23/24 academic year. 

Miriam Riggs 

  • HIST 350 - Chicana/o Experience in the Borderlands was converted to a ZCCM course, saving students $426.25 during the 23/24 academic year. 
  • HIST 356 - Culture and Identity in Latin America was reduced by $37.75, saving students $717.25 during the 23/24 academic year. 

Shannon Nolan-Arañez

  • GEL 101 - The Student, The University, The Community was converted to a ZCCM course, saving students $5,560 during the 23/24 academic year. 

Rebeca Perren and Abigail Nappier Cherup 

  • MKTG 302 - Foundations of Marketing was reduced by $85, saving students $42,075 during the 23/24 academic year. 

Robert Iafe, Lenuta Gonzalez, Reinaldo Compagnone, and Jackaline Julien

  • CHEM 201 & CHEM 202 - Organic Chemistry were converted to ZCCM courses, saving students $26,840 during the 23/24 academic year. 

Zahra Gharibi 

  • BUS 322 - Introduction to Data Analytics was converted to a ZCCM course, saving students $11,817 during the 23/24 academic year. 
  • BUS 324 - Introduction to Business Analytics was converted to a ZCCM course, saving students $34,466.25 during the 23/24 academic year.
